Pressure-induced instability of the fergusonite phase of EuNbO4 studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence spect…

2020

In this article, we present high-pressure experimental investigations on EuNbO4, an interesting technologically important material, using synchrotron based x-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and europium photoluminescence measurements up to 39.2, 31.6, and 32.4 GPa, respectively. All three techniques show the stability of the ambient monoclinic phase until 20 GPa. Beyond that, a pressure-induced structural phase transition takes place with the coexistence of two phases over a wide pressure range. The structure of the high-pressure phase has been determined as orthorhombic (space group: Imma) with a volume discontinuity of nearly 9% at the transition indicating the nature of trans…

Acoustic vibrations of monoclinic zirconia nanocrystals

2011

International audience; Polarized low-frequency Raman spectra originating from confined acoustic vibrations are reported for monoclinic ZrO2 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution synthesized from a continuous supercritical water process. The monoclinic lattice structure is taken into account for the interpretation of the spectra by comparing with isotropic and anisotropic continuum elasticity calculations for monodomain nanocrystals. The various mechanisms leading to the broadening of the Raman peaks are discussed. We demonstrate that an accurate determination of the size distribution of the nanoparticles is possible using the Raman peak due to the fundamental breathing vibration wh…

Correlation between in situ structural and optical characterization of the semiconductor-to-metal phase transition of VO2 thin films on sapphire

2020

A detailed structural investigation of the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) in vanadium dioxide thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition was performed by in situ temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The structural results are correlated with those of infrared radiometry measurements in the SWIR (2.5-5 μm) and LWIR (8-10.6 μm) spectral ranges. The main results indicate a good agreement between XRD and optical analysis, therefore demonstrating that the structural transition from monoclinic to tetragonal phases is the dominating mechanism for controlling the global properties of the SMT transition. The picture that emerges is a SMT tr…

A Ferroelectric Iron(II) Spin Crossover Material

2017

A dual-function material in which ferroelectricity and spin crossover coexist in the same temperature range has been obtained. Our synthetic strategy allows the construction of acentric crystal structures in a predictable way and is based on the high directionality of hydrogen bonds. The well-known iron(II) spin crossover complex [Fe(bpp)₂]²+ (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine), a four-fold noncentrosymmetric H-bond donor, was combined with a disymmetric H-bond acceptor such as the isonicotinate (isonic) anion to afford [Fe(bpp)₂](isonic)₂·2H₂O. This low-spin iron(II) compound crystallises in the acentric nonpolar I-4 space group and shows piezoelectricity and SHG properties. Upon dehydra…

Self-assembly of the tetrachlorido(oxalato)rhenate( iv ) anion with protonated organic cations: X-ray structures and magnetic properties

2016

Two novel ReIV compounds of formulae [H2bpy][ReIVCl4(ox)] (1) and [H3biim]2[ReIVCl4(ox)] (2) [H2bpy2+ = 4,4′-bipyridinium dication, H3biim+ = 2,2′-biimidazolium monocation, and ox2− = oxalate dianion] have been synthesised and magneto-structurally characterised. 1 crystallises in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c, and 2 crystallises in the triclinic system with space group P[1 with combining macron]. The ReIV ion in 1 and 2 is six-coordinate, bonded to four chloride ions and two oxalate-oxygen atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. Short intermolecular ReIV–Cl⋯Cl–ReIV contacts, Cl⋯π type interactions and hydrogen bonds are present in the crystal lattice of both compounds, gener…

One-Dimensional TiO2-B Crystals Synthesised by Hydrothermal Process and Their Antibacterial Behaviour on Escherichia coli

2016

We have successfully synthesised one-dimensional single crystals of monoclinic phase titanium dioxide nanostructures (TiO2-B), prepared by a hydrothermal process. Morphological characterization was carried out by atomic force and scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. In order to study the crystalline structure, samples were calcined at 500°C in an air-filled chamber. X-ray diffraction results indicated that as-prepared samples presented diffraction patterns of hydrate hydrogen titanate and those calcined at 500°C exhibited the TiO2-B and anatase phases, confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the one-dimensional nanostructures ha…

Structure of chloroantimonates(III) with an imidazolium cation: (C3H5N2)[SbCl4] and (C3H5N2)2[SbCl5]

2003

Abstract Two different chloroantimonates(III) with an imidazolium cation have been synthesized by the reaction of antimony trichloride and imidazole in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. The crystals of (C3H5N2)[SbCl4] are monoclinic, space group C2/c, while (C3H5N2)2[SbCl5] crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbcn. Both crystals are built of one dimensional zig-zag chains composed of [SbCl6]3− octahedra connected by edges and corners, respectively. The cavities between inorganic chains are filled by imidazolium cations. In both structures, one crystallographically independent imidazolium cation is rotationally disordered, and the positions of all atoms are split bet…

Structure and Phase Transitions in Ethylenediammonium Dichloride and its Salts with Antimony Trichloride

2000

During the mixing of ethylenediammonium dichloride and antimony trichloride except of reported earlier [NH3(CH2)2NH3]5(Sb2Cl11)2 · 4 H2O a new salt [NH3(CH2)2NH3](SbCl4)2 was obtained. The crystals are monoclinic at 295 K, space group C2/m, a = 13.829(3), b = 7.408(1), c = 7.588(2) A; β = 103.18(3)°; V = 756.9(3) A3; Z = 2; dc = 2.585, dm = 2.56(2) g · cm–3. The structure consists of anionic sublattice built of Sb2Cl82– units composed of two SbCl52– square pyramids connected by edge. The ethylenediammonium cations are located in anionic cavities. The cations are disordered. Each methylene carbon atom is split between two positions. The X-ray diffraction, DSC, TGA and dilatometric methods we…

In both crystals the 1,2,4-triazole rings are planar. The anionic sublatt…

Study of the interaction between [Cu(bipy)]2+ and oxalate in dimethyl sulfoxide. Crystal structure of [Cu2(bipy)2(H2O)2ox]SO4·[Cu(bipy)ox]

1991

Abstract A study of complex formation between [Cu(bipy)]2+ and ox2− (bipy and ox2− being 2,2′-bipyridyl and the dianion of oxalic acid), has been carried out by potentiometry in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. The constants of the equilibria and are log β110 = 11.165(1) and log β210 = 13.185(5) at 25 °C and 0.1 mol dm−3 tetra-n- butylammonium perchlorate. The high values of these constants are consistent with the symmetrical bidentate and bis-bidentate modes of oxalate in [Cu(bipy)ox] and [Cu2(bipy)2ox]2+ units, respectively, as shown by X-ray diffraction studies. Well-formed single crystals of [Cu2(bipy)2(H2O)2ox]SO4· [Cu(bipy)ox] were grown from aqueous solutions and characterized by X-ray d…
